Marplex Beagle

So here's an odd one.  It is marked "1955 Marplex", it seems to be chalkware, and I would say this is a beagle.

I have never found another similar example, so origin is unknown.  Probably mid-century.

Victor

Nipper the dog (1884-1895) was a symbol of many early voice recording brands, based on the classic painting "His Master's Voice". One of these brands was "RCA Victor" phonograph company.

There are a number of chalkware versions of Nipper including several marked with the Victor brand. Smaller ones like the one in my collection (below) were used as promotional items. Approximate value $20.

Colonial Couple

"Colonial Couple" is an informal name for a decal to be found on pottery from dozens of different pottery makers. It is common from the 1940s to 1970s.

"La Vierge du Sourire"

Chalkware is often used for religious statues and souvenirs.  "La vierge du sourire" is French for: The Virgin of the Smile or Our Lady of the Smile/Smiles. This type of icon always shows the Virgin Mary on a globe, crushing a snake underfoot. This version probably dates from the 1950s or 1960s. Maker unknown.

Yellow Roses

Alice Hendee Price 1940
I found this painting at a local thrift shop for less than $10.  Someone had removed the frame, presumably attaching more value to it than to the painting. It is signed by Alice Hendee Price.

Alice Hendee Price (1889-1969) was a artist in Bronxville, New York, who was known for painting portraits but produced very diverse artworks, especially later in life.

She worked from at least 1917-1956, based on newspaper reports and gallery records, including solo shows. One of her earliest works is a wartime food conservation poster.  She also created the chapel triptych shown right which was dedicated in 1947.

Her works don't have  particularly high monetary value but she is certainly a part of America's art history.
